Throughout the long hard road of attempting to recover from a traumatic brain injury, one constant thing has kept me grounded and has brought inspiration back into my life; the simple act of carving a spoon.
Why spoons? A few months into my recovery, one of my doctors told me to check out the “Spoon Theory”. He could tell my biggest struggle would be learning to reserve my new, very limited energy supply, and accept the slowness this recovery could need.
The Spoon Theory is originally a theory used to help patients with chronic illnesses, but I think this theory can apply to anyone. "Spoons" are a visual representation used as a unit of measure to quantify how much energy a person has throughout a given day. Each activity or social engagement requires a given number of spoons. When a person runs out of spoons, there is no choice but to rest until their spoons are “replenished”.
I believe we all have the ability to rebuild ourselves. This project has proven to me my strength and perseverance; I turned a painful and frustrating situation into something new and exciting. All products at Spoonmade are hand drawn and hand carved by me. They have been a huge part of my recovery. Each one of them is unique!
